Is Your Business Stuck in This Same Dilemma?
I was in a frenzy. I knew what action I needed to take, but something was holding me back. I ran my predicament past a trusted advisor.
She replied, "Jeff, why don't you just do what you need to do?"
I got more frustrated. "I want to do it, but something is holding me back. Right now I'm trying to figure out what it is. Once I do, I'll take the action I need. But until I figure that out, I'm stuck."
"You're making this way too complicated," she replied. "You're putting more energy into worrying about why you're not taking action than it would take to just do the action itself. Stop thinking about it and do it."
She was right. I buckled down and forced myself into action. Once I did it I found myself wondering what all my angst had been about.
What was holding me back was not some deeply rooted psychological barrier I needed to overcome. It was simple inertia. Once I took the action, everything about it was easy.
So why do I tell you this?
I'm not the only one I've seen go through this kind of angst. As a matter of fact, I've found it a common malady among business owners of all levels of experience.
Some big action comes along that the business owner needs to take and everything grinds to a halt. Analysis turns into paralysis. Nothing moves.
So what's the solution? Get something moving. Close your eyes and take a step. Nine times out of ten, the fear holding you back is nothing more than simple inertia. It's amazing how much better things look when you're moving.
Jeff
P.S. I've found that the biggest obstacle that I face is the one between my ears. Between the unrealistic expections and the unnecessary fears and doubts, my brain can do more to hold back my business than any external obstacle.
That's why I find Mike Kemski's BANABU so helpful. In a no-nonsense way, it cuts through all the mind games we play on ourselves to help focus on achieving success.
