Are You Making It in Life -- or Doing Something Better?
I got an email the other day from Mike Kemski. It got me thinking so much that I just had to share it.

Mike is the creator of BANABU, an excellent personal growth program that has helped me a lot. He's a pretty cool guy with a great sense of humor. He talked about going out for lunch recently with a very successful friend. As often happens with Mike, their lunch devolved into a hilarious misadventure.

But something significant came out of it.

The conversation turned a little more serious. Mike's highly successful friend started talking about less trivial obstacles he faced.

Seems that success has not insulated him from obstacles. In fact, success is directly responsible for throwing MORE obstacles in his path than most people experience.

So if he gets so many more obstacles, why is he successful?

I'll let Mike tell you in his own words:

"The only difference from the people who make it and the people who don't
is that the people who make it look forward to and expect that to happen and the
people who don't think they have 'made it' when they figure one thing out.

"The people who make it (and this applies to life in general) are the ones
who spend the time and effort to master and figure that first thing out for the
sole reason being to expose the next thing.

"They know that you 'never' get it done and that you only evolve what is
there into the next phase or level so you can choose the next fork in the
road.

"While people who don't make it are trying to get it done so they can
stop!

"... you must always continue to learn and grow and I think along with that
should be you must always expect and have the mind set that the actions you take
today to figure out or solve a problem are really the first steps to creating
more problems, challenges, and obstacles in the future.

"Because by doing that you always have what you need in your life TO
continue to learn and grow."

I've found that to be so true. We look for a destination. We look to arrive at a place where everything is perfectly at peace and nothing can possibly cause us discomfort or uncertainty.

But that destination doesn't exist. As another favorite person of mine, Jim Edwards, says: "Success doesn't rid your life of problems; it simply gives you the right to deal with more interesting ones."

It's like with a video game. You beat all the obstacles in one level and you advance to the next one. That next level is more challenging -- more interesting -- than the last. You get a deeper sense of accomplishment the higher you go. But you never, ever come to the point where there's nothing left to overcome.

If you ever did reach the end of the highest level, would you keep playing just to bask in hours upon hours of wandering around whatever world it portrays, with no challenges? BOOORRING!

No, you'd move on to another game that you could challenge and conquer.

We simply aren't made to live the kind of safe and uneventful lives we think we're trying to find.

We're made to stretch our limits. We're made to become more than we already are. And when we attain that, we're made to become even more than we have become.

Don't get caught up in the search for a safe destination. Trust me. You wouldn't be happy there.

Are You Narrowing Down Your Scope?
If you're like most new business owners, you probably don't think you know enough running a business. But a lot of new business owners struggle because they know TOO MUCH!

I know that statement describes me. I have accumulated so much information and so many tactics over the years that I have trouble piercing through the clutter enough to narrow down the scope of things.

But it's not just grizzled veterans who have that problem. Even a lot of people who are new to Internet marketing suffer from it.

If you've been on the Internet for any amount of time at all, you've probably read hundreds of articles about Internet marketing, dozens of ebooks, maybe even a few home study courses.

Maybe, like me, you're a recovering info-holic. I know so many things I COULD do that I have trouble seeing what I NEED TO do.

But that only results in getting stuck and going nowhere. Understanding how all the pieces of the Internet puzzle fit together is crucial. And it's even more crucial to use the knowledge you have to take action in a meaningful way toward your goals.

This blog post was inspired by comments I made on The Net Reporter Internet Marketing Site. I said them in response to the site's new emphasis.

YOU CAN TRUST THIS POST!!!! -- Yeah, sure!
I had to chuckle when I checked my email just now. Among the deluge of spam that accumulates overnight was one that used as its sender's name "YOU CAN TRUST THIS EMAIL!!!"

Now I'm supposed to trust a piece of what is obviously spam and buy whatever they tell me I absolutely have to have simply because they say I should trust whatever they say? Yeah, sure!

It shows, though, that there's more to gaining your target audience's trust than just telling them to trust you. What do you need to do?

First, lose the hype. Screaming capital letters and lots of exclamation points immediately raise defenses. People don't want to feel manipulated and hype that tries to generate a phony sense of excitement about a product tells people that this is not someone to be trusted.

Secondly, make sure you focus not on what you want or on what you think of your product, but on the problem your target audience is trying to solve. Show that you understand what they're looking for and they'll be more likely to believe that your product will actually help them.

Finally, understand the doubts they're likely to have. They will always have doubts: "Will this really work for MY specific problem?" "Can I return it if it doesn't work?" "Will it get to me safely?" "If I buy from this business, will they carry through on what they promised?" The better you understand the doubts they will experience, the better you can weave in answers that will alleviate those doubts into your sales copy.

You don't gain trust by shouting people into submission. You gain it by taking the time to understand their needs and by showing that you have anticipated and answered their nagging questions.

Are You Getting the Type of Information You Need to Succeed?
There are really two types of information you see online. Mistaking the one type for the other can severely hamper your business.

Here's what you find online:
The choice seems simple, doesn't it? Why pay for information when you can easily find the same information for free?

But it's not that simple.

The information you get for free usually tells you WHAT you can do to get the results you want. It gives you an overview. You can get ideas from it, but you have to figure out for yourself HOW to get those results. Most people give away free information to show others what's possible and whet those others' appetites to buy the information on HOW to get results.

For example, step-by-step info on HOW to choose a profitable niche is far more valuable than information that simply tells you that you can make money by choosing a profitable niche. It's worth paying for because it saves you from having to figure it out yourself by trial and error.

Free information often brings the excitement of what's possible, but can lead to frustration as you struggle to figure things out for yourself.

Don't get me wrong. It's possible to figure things out over time by trial and error. If you work hard enough and smart enough, you can eventually reinvent the wheel that others have already created.

If you want to succeed in the shortest possible time, though, it's important to have a guide who has already done all the how-to's that you need to discover.
