Sometimes I Think I'll Never Learn
I know better. But I keep coming right back to the same dumb mistake.

I was brainstorming some topics for free reports I could create in connection with one of my favorite tools for building a success mindset. So I started assessing what content I had available to build reports from.

DUMB!

I was starting from what I had available. Worst place to start when trying to tap into other people's needs!

I know better. I've learned, like, umpteen times that when you build from what's in YOUR head, you usually end up with something that does nothing more than generate a big "ho-hum" from your target audience.

Yet that's the place I instinctively start in my thinking EVERY SINGLE TIME.

This time, though, I was lucky enough to have another marketer call me on it. She reminded me that I had no business building content from what I wanted to say. And she redirected me where I needed to go: keyword research, Yahoo! Answers, Google Answers, and visiting the forums to find out the questions that people are actually asking and the problems they're trying to solve.

Well, at least I came to my senses before I spent a lot of time answering questions no one was asking.

I routinely tell people the right way to do it. But when it comes to doing it myself, I instinctively dash headlong down the wrong path. Maybe someday I'll actually get it through my head to start with what others are looking for instead of starting with what I think would be cool.
